Lupita Nyong’o – Best Supporting Actress – 12 Years a Slave – and Much More
Lupita Nyong’o has just won an Oscar as Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Patsey in 12 Years a Slave.
As great an achievement as this is, I see more in this young woman – and it’s just the kind of qualities that we all should applaud.
Just a few days before the Academy Awards, at Essence Magazine’s Seventh Annual Black Women in Hollywood Award Dinner, Lupita gave an inspiring and very personal story of her own struggles growing up as a dark-skinned girl. She tells how she tried to bargain with God to lighten her skin but that He didn’t listen and how she ultimately arrived at self acceptance.
