Basilica of our Lady of Peace, Yamoussoukro, Ivory Coast – the Other “World’s Largest Church”.
Basilica of Our Lady of Peace of Yamoussoukro Ivory Coast
Worldsiteguides did a great job of selecting, researching, and presenting some of the finest places in the world for our education and appreciation via the internet. Many of the sites feature narrated videos that greatly enhance the experience. Fortunately, this is one of those sites.
This Basilica is a controversial one for several reasons. And while the video narrator will describe them, I take no sides. I would note that it isn’t the first time the same controversial points have been raised about spectacular edifices and about politicians and rulers and their big dreams. – Dick S
The cornerstone for the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace of Yamoussoukro was laid in 1985 and the church stood completed four years later. It was later consecrated in 1990 by Pope John Paul II. The basilica was constructed using exotic materials, including imported stained glass windows from France and marble from Italy.
As one can imagine, the price tag for the stunning Basilica of Our Lady of Peace of Yamoussoukro was quite hefty. The total cost landed on more than 300 million dollars; a huge amount which added a lot to the national debt of Côte d’Ivoire – some say it even doubled it.

Worldsiteguides used to have a full-featured travel website featuring many of the world’s most historic and famous sites. The only remaining current web presence, however, is a YouTube Channel at:

You can still see dozens of narrated HD videos of famous places around the world and it is well worth checking out.
