Fanny Crosby – Blind Hymn Writer – Faith Stories You Won’t Forget Series
Who is Fanny Crosby?
I noticed several years ago that many of the “old hymns of the faith” were written by Fanny Crosby.
I was curious about who this person was who had apparently written over a dozen hymns (actually over 8000!).
When I found out the whole story I was astounded.
You will be too!
In some ways Fanny Crosby’s story is difficult to tell.
First, it is a story that began in 1820 and spanned 95 years. There are no videos of Fanny and her black and white photos aren’t very flattering.
The names of other people in her life are mostly unfamiliar and she lived a very plain, frugal lifestyle that doesn’t resonate very well in the culture of today.
Make no mistake, however, her story is worth the telling and her lifetime achievements are remarkable.
I’ll give some reference links at the end of this post but the best way to get acquainted with Fanny Crosby is through the impact she has had on Kim Collingsworth, one of the Collingsworth Family Singers.
This gospel singing group is well known in gospel circles and is frequently included in Gaither Homecoming appearances as well as through a full schedule of concert appearances in churches and other venues.
In fact, they were just here in Lakeland, Florida at my church.
Here is Kim Collingsworth.
