Great Cathedrals of the World Notre – Dame Basilica of Montreal, Canada
Introduction
per Sacred Destinations
Big enough to hold 4,000 worshipers and breathtaking in the richness of its interior furnishings, the Notre-Dame Basilica in Montreal is a magnificent Neo-Gothic church.
Designed in 1824 by James O’Donnell, an Irish-American Protestant architect from New York, the architect was so moved by the experience that he converted to Catholicism. Visitors to the basilica today can understand the impact. When the structure was finished it was the largest church in North America.

This Cathedral is listed on the Sacred Destinations website. This site provides background information, high quality images and often a narrated video (not here, however) of major sacred destinations around the world.
The independently produced YouTube video below presents the cathedral in a very unique way. It displays an impressive light show of features of the cathedral.
That was quite a show, wasn’t it. When I first saw that there was a light show, I was concerned that it might detract from the sacred atmosphere that should certainly be preserved. I think they did a very effective and respectful job.
