The Way, Way Back Background

When I was a a kid in the middle of the last century (ouch, that sounds discouraging!), I spent a lot of time outdoors having fun or searching for friends to figure out what we could do to have some fun.

When the homework and assigned chores were taken care of, my mother would say something like ” Go on outside and find something to do and don’t get in any trouble”

This ritual was repeated countless times in all kinds of weather – well almost all kinds.

My only indoor hobby as a preteen was building model airplanes out of balsa wood.

We had no television until I was about 13 years old – a smallish black and white miracle machine that threatened to change my whole way of spending my “fun” time.

That is until my parents saw what was happening and severely limited my TV time.

Now, fast forward to today.

When you ask a young child what he/she does for fun, what do you think she/he will say?

Take a look as this question is asked of three generations of people.

Scary!

As one of the oldest of the three generations, I am most alarmed at the dramatic change from outdoors to indoors that is implicit in the answers.

Apparently, the video makers, Nature Valley, felt the same way.

How about you?

If you are an adult, especially if you’re a parent, do you see and attempt to alter the ever increasing digital time consumption of your children?

How do you do it?
