My Favorite Christmas Movie – The Christmas Story

I watch a lot of movies between Thanksgiving and Christmas and almost all of them relate to Christmas. How about you? My favorite is The Christmas Story with Ralphie and his BB gun.

Some of the movies are serious depictions of the birth of Jesus and I am sure to watch some of these. Actually, it’s more than that, I’m one of those “Keep Christ in Christmas” or “Jesus is the Reason for the Season” people.

So, the retelling of the birth of Jesus is my favorite Christmas movie whatever version of it I am watching.

My Christmas Confession

As much as I want the true reason we celebrate Christmas to dominate my experience of the Christmas season, I have made room for some major concessions to the cultural pressures to focus on Santa Clause, exchanging gifts, decorating the house and yard with lights and watch the growing number of secular Christmas movies that appear at Christmas time.

I have several favorites that my wife, Lynn, and I watch every year.

  • The Grinch
  • Miracle on 34th Street
  • White Christmas
  • The Man Who Came to Dinner
  • The Christmas Shoes
  • Charlie Brown Christmas
  • Holiday Inn
  • A Christmas Carol
  • And, of course – It’s a Wonderful Life

I love all of these films, BUT, my (our) favorite is The Christmas Story.

At our Senior Citizen stage of life we can relate very closely to the ambience of this film. The neighborhood, the school, desks, the stereotyped teacher, bullies – the whole scene.

We also recall the department store windows, letters to Santa, our fervent hopes that we would receive our most sought after gift(s) and even some cautionary comments from our parents about not setting our gift hopes too high.

Basically, our whole childhoods were in there and there were a few things in the movie that we didn’t experience.

And, apparently, Lynn and I aren’t the only ones who feel this way. The Christmas Story is run and rerun every year and is a sure audience winner.

You Know the Movie – But Did You Know This?

The following short YouTube video is one of several that seek to add some things about the movie and its actors and actresses that we may not know.

The clip claims that the added knowledge will “change the way you watch”.

I don’t know if I want anything to change the way I watch The Christmas Story so I thought about ignoring the clip and others like it.

In the end, curiosity got the best of me and I watched.

So, think hard about whether you want anything to change the way YOU watch The Christmas Story.

If you just can’t take the curiosity, go ahead and watch the clip!
