God’s Wife.

Its cold and snowy across much of the U. S. and its cold even in Central Florida where my wife, Lynn, and I spend half of our year. We just missed a frost last night! So this seemed to be the perfect time to visit this cold and snowy scene in New York City some years ago. The story claims to be true but I haven’t found any information about it one way or the other.

Have You Seen God’s Wife?

Sometimes things happen that seem to come from the hand of God.

But sometimes they seem to have a woman’s touch. This leads some people to speak or write about the possibility that God has a wife.

I’m not convinced that this has any biblical or other bona fide theological basis, though some believe that God did have a wife, but here is a story that asks the question from a different perspective.

The Boy Who Thought He Met God’s Wife

Now here is a claimed eye witness account from New York City, on a cold day in December, some years ago:

A little boy, about 10-years-old, was standing before a shoe store on the roadway, barefooted, peering through the window, and shivering with cold.

A lady approached the young boy and said, “My, but you’re in such deep thought staring in that window!”

“I was asking God to give me a pair of shoes,” was the boy’s reply.

The lady took him by the hand, went into the store, and asked the clerk to get half a dozen pairs of socks for the boy. She then asked if he could give her a basin of water and a towel. He quickly brought them to her.

She took the little fellow to the back part of the store and, removing her gloves, knelt down, washed his little feet, and dried them with the towel.

By this time, the clerk had returned with the socks. Placing a pair upon the boy’s feet, she purchased him a pair of shoes..

She tied up the remaining pairs of socks and gave them to him. She patted him on the head and said, “No doubt, you will be more comfortable now.”

As she turned to go, the astonished kid caught her by the hand, and looking up into her face, with tears in his eyes, asked her:

“Are you God’s wife?”

Some Thoughts

I can’t put precisely the right words together to refute the idea that God has a wife but I don’t believe He has one.

At the same time, I can’t dismiss how a boy’s answered prayer with a  godly woman’s touch makes him ask “Are you God’s Wife?”.

The boy probably sees God as a Heavenly Father who isn’t likely to act the way the female stranger acted toward him.

Ironically, Jesus also washed dirty feet, but he wasn’t acting in quite the same way as what the boy experienced.

I think the best I can do to is try to guess the woman’s answer to the boy that wasn’t disclosed in the story.

Here goes. (Bear in mind, this is only a fictional add on to the true story.)

“No, young man, I am not God’s wife, because I don’t believe God has a wife. But if He did, I would like to think that she would be pleased that I was able to see your needs and help you with them. I do strive to see things the way God does and to act the way I would expect Him to act if He were here in person.

I also believe in the power of prayer and I believe God answered your prayer through me. I am honored that He chose to do that.”
